Do You Know Your Skin? pt. 5 (Acne-Prone)
Acne-Prone skin is one of the most difficult skin types to correct and find products that help. But hopefully I can offer some tips and tricks that may be able to help. If you haven't already, check out my part 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the series to identify your skin type and discover misconceptions and fixes for sensitive, dry, oily, and combination skin.
First you need to identify what type of acne you have. There are many different types that all have different treatments, the first type (the main type I will focus on in this post) is common acne. This is your typical white heads, black heads, and other pimples or breakouts on the face. Infected/inflamed pimples, this is usually from a clogged hair follicle or bumps with yellowish pus. These are typically sensitive to touch and painful when forming and easy to scar. The next type are cysts or firm bumps that are red and painful, these need to be treated by expert dermatologists.
Once you determine the type of acne you have, you can next find the causes. Some of the causes include (excess oil/sebum), dead skin cells, bacteria, ingrown hairs, or hormones. Hormonal acne is one of the more difficult types to treat and I would recommend seeing a dermatologist or specialist for hormonal acne seeing as though my tips and tricks are more for common acne caused by sebum, dead skin, and bacteria.
Now that you've determined your type of acne and why you have it, it's time to treat! Many people with acne-prone skin types use proactive or other chemical based products that may work temporarily but are probably not getting to the root of your problems and will most likely stimulate your skin with the chemicals in these products and then once your skin becomes used to it, it will revert back. I used to have very acne-prone skin and used proactive for a year or two in middle school before I realized this would not be the solution to my problems.
It is incredibly important for people with acne-prone skin types to develop a skin routine you follow each and every night that addresses all possible problems that are giving you acne. What I found to help my acne was a full Korean skin care routine.
Double cleansing is vital to acne prone skin and getting the bacterias and dirt off of the skin which may be one of the attributing factors to your acne. Next would be to exfoliate and use clay or removable masks to extract dead skin cells and sebaceous filaments. Toning the skin can help seep into the affected area clean the spots. Serums for acne usually dry out acne, these can be helpful at times, but a lot of times acne may appear from LACK of moisture. So like I've said in previous posts MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE! Find a gel like moisturizer that will absorb into the skin and finish with a cream.
